A Los Alamitos Dental Care in Los Alamitos, California, Dr. Kerry Hahn and our team understand that patients often have questions about what to expect after dental implants. While the procedure is highly effective in restoring missing teeth, it’s normal to experience some side effects as your body begins healing. Not every symptom is a cause for alarm—many are simply part of your body’s natural response. Knowing what’s normal can give you peace of mind and help you recognize when to reach out for support.
Below, we’ve compiled a helpful list of common post-implant experiences you shouldn’t panic about and guidance on when to call our office for follow-up care.
- Mild Bleeding: A small amount of bleeding or pink-tinged saliva is common within the first 24–48 hours after your dental implant surgery. This is part of the healing process as the tissues around the implant adjust. Light bleeding typically stops on its own with gentle pressure from gauze. However, if you experience heavy or prolonged bleeding that doesn’t subside, that’s a sign to call us right away.Â
- Swelling of the Gums or Face: Swelling is a normal reaction to surgery, especially within the first few days. It may peak around day two or three and then gradually decrease. Using a cold compress can help reduce discomfort. If swelling worsens after several days or becomes severe, that could indicate infection, so don’t hesitate to contact our office.
- Bruising Around the Jaw or Gums: Bruising often appears near the surgical site or along the face and neck. Although it can look alarming, it is usually harmless and will fade naturally over the course of a week or so. If bruising is accompanied by severe pain or unusual discharge, it’s best to have us evaluate the area.
- Mild Discomfort or Soreness: Some tenderness around the implant site is completely expected. Over-the-counter pain relievers are often enough to manage it, and the soreness should gradually improve daily. If pain increases or becomes difficult to control, it may point to a complication that requires professional attention.
- Minor Difficulty Chewing: As your gums heal, it’s natural to feel hesitant when chewing or experience temporary sensitivity. Sticking to soft foods for the first several days will allow your mouth to recover comfortably. We recommend calling our team if chewing feels increasingly difficult or painful beyond the initial recovery period.
- A Slight Feeling of Looseness at First: Because your implant hasn’t fully integrated with the jawbone yet, it may feel a bit “different” than your natural teeth in the early stages. This sensation typically resolves as the bone fuses with the implant. However, if the implant feels unstable or shifts in place, it’s important to let us know immediately.
