Lifelong dental care starts in childhood … with quality, consistent preventative dentistry!

Oral diseases affect more kids than asthma, allergies like hay fever, and diabetes. Fortunately, pediatric problems with the teeth and the gums can be prevented and may even be reversible (when treated at their early stages). With our focus on stellar dentistry for life, the six talented dentists and our team at Los Alamitos Dental Care have invested in an array of diagnostic and therapeutic technologies and preventative services. These advanced offerings support our kind and skilled team’s ability to provide the most satisfying, pleasant, and convenient experience possible for individuals of all ages across southern California.

It is never “too soon” to practice good oral habits!

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry broadly recommends that the first visit be scheduled as soon as the first tooth develops and by no later than the first birthday (the 1-1-1 rule). We typically like to see young patients for the first time by around the age of three. While this guidance may sound a bit premature, it is essential to healthy oral and overall development.

After all, baby teeth are not throw-aways simply because they are temporary. They are crucial to the healthy development of permanent teeth. Notably, they serve as “place-holders” for the secondary teeth that will ideally “stick around” for a lifetime. If we do not correct problems as soon as they rear their ugly head, this situation gives rise to much more aggressive, invasive, costly, and traumatic care later in life. We always want to be ahead of problems. We do not want to play “catch-up.”

Sometimes, these initial visits are just about getting your child comfortable with the office. A relaxed child becomes a confident adult who doesn’t fear the dentist. Fearful patients generally have poorer oral health than their relaxed counterparts because they avoid the routine services that keep conditions like tooth decay and gum disease at bay. Our dentists and staff can also demonstrate ways for you to maintain your kid’s health. These suggestions evolve over time; for example, we may start by advising on how to clean baby gums. And then “graduate” to proper techniques and products to use to brush baby teeth.

As your child grows and gets into a routine of 6-month check-ups, we can administer professional preventive treatments, too. These services are fast, affordable, and painless. They help your child avoid restorative care, like dental fillings, crowns, and root canal therapy. Options include:

  • Topical fluoride supplementation is safe and beneficial for keeping teeth strong
  • Dental sealants, safe coverings for decay-prone back teeth
  • Oral appliances, such as sports mouthguards for young athletes or nightguards for children who “brux” or grind their teeth

It takes a strong dental home to help rear a child! We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting your family. Call (562) 539-0011 to schedule your visit to our office in Los Alamitos, CA.
